HVAC Maintenance Tips for Pet Owners

If you have a pet you probably love them just as much as your human family, but that doesn’t mean they don’t cause some trouble from time to time. One thing that they may be affecting is your HVAC system. Hair, dirt, and allergens that a pet tracks in from playing outside can clog your vents and dirty your air filters quickly, lowering your indoor air quality. Today we have some maintenance tips to help keep your HVAC system functioning properly while still loving on your pets.

Tip 1 — Keep your pets well-groomed and do this regularly.

Cats or dogs that have lots of fur or that are prone to shedding need consistent grooming. Brushing your pet daily can help reduce the amount of hair they shed in your home. It’s also important to keep your pets clean, that way they aren’t tracking in dirt and other allergens.

Tip 2 — Change your air filters regularly.

If you haven’t picked up on this, we recommend that you change your air filters once a month to keep your home’s indoor air quality healthy. Not only can pet fur and allergens get caught in your filter, but so can pet dander. After a while, all of these things will build up on your filter making your unit have to work extra hard.

Tip 3 –Pay attention to the pet door if you have one.

Having a pet door allows your pet to be more independent and probably makes your life easier too. However, it’s not making your HVAC system’s job easier, in fact, it actually causes it to work harder. The constant fluctuation in temperature causes high energy consumption. Your HVAC system has to work extra hard to maintain the proper temperature.

Tip 4 — Make sure your home is pet-proof.

This means making sure anything dangerous is well covered. The last thing you want is your curious pet to chew a cord to your HVAC system. You may also want to fence off your AC unit if it’s somewhere accessible to your dogs. This way they can’t mess around near it or pee on it. Simple steps like these will keep your pet and HVAC system safe.
