What are the two types of air conditioning systems?

We install and service both central air conditioning systems and mini split air conditioners in the Hampton Roads Region. Central air conditioners use air ducts to circulate cool air throughout your home, while mini split systems are ductless, and use air handlers mounted to the wall to provide air conditioning in each room.

How often should air conditioning systems be serviced?

Both your air conditioning and heating system should be checked yearly by a professional HVAC technician. The most ideal time to have your air conditioning system serviced is in the springtime before the arrival of hot summer weather. Our HVAC technicians will inspect all components for cleanliness, safety and performance, check refrigerant levels, and perform cleaning and repairs.

In addition to professional HVAC maintenance, air filters should be changed regularly according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, usually every 1-3 months. You can also help maintain your air conditioning system by keeping the outdoor unit free of dirt, leaves, and lawn debris.

How long do air conditioners last?

Both central air conditioning systems and mini split air conditioners last an average of 10-15 years when properly maintained by a certified HVAC technician. However, failure to perform annual air conditioner maintenance can significantly decrease the lifespan of a system. The harder and longer your system works in less-than-ideal conditions, the sooner it will need repairs and eventual replacement.

What temperature should I set my thermostat at?

Because most air conditioners can only handle a 20-degree difference between the inside and outside air temperature, you’ll want to adjust your thermostat to stay within 20 degrees of the outside temperature to avoid unnecessary wear and tear on your air conditioning system. For example, if the temperature outside is 85 degrees, then your thermostat should be set for no lower than 65 degrees.

How can I lower my home cooling costs?

To ensure your air conditioning system is running efficiently, change your air filters regularly and schedule air conditioning maintenance with an HVAC professional at least once a year. We also recommend installing a programmable thermostat to regulate your air conditioning use, and turning off your AC when you leave the house. In some cases, upgrading your air conditioner to a more efficient model may be your best option.

To further help lower your home cooling costs, we offer coupons and discounts on air conditioning installation, maintenance, and repairs in Hampton Roads and the surrounding area.

Why do air conditioners ice up?

Air conditioners can ice up for a number of reasons, including low refrigerant levels, a dirty evaporator coil or a mechanical failure, such as a defective motor or relay. If your air conditioner is icing up, it’s best to call A/C Masters. Our HVAC technicians can quickly diagnose the problem and perform 24/7 emergency air conditioner service and repairs.

Why do air conditioners leak water?

Water leaks can occur when the condensate drain line is clogged with dirt, dust, or mold, and the water doesn’t drain properly. Water leakage can also be the result of a broken condensate pan or from ice defrosting on the air conditioner coil or air handler. If your air conditioner is leaking water, give us a call and we’ll send an HVAC technician to identify and fix the problem.

Why isn’t my air conditioner blowing cold air?

Sometimes, a dirty air filter can cause an air conditioner to stop blowing cold air. However, if changing the air filter doesn’t resolve the problem, it’s best to call A/C Masters. Our HVAC technicians will check for common causes, including low refrigerant levels and thermostat-related issues, and look for blocked ducts, leaks and broken condenser coils.
