Preparing for Your HVAC for the Spring
Here are some suggestions on how you can prepare your HVAC unit for the spring. We want to preface all of these suggestions by saying the best option is to schedule a maintenance check. It’s great to be able to run some of these items yourself, but you should always consider having your system checked by a professional!
- Start by changing the air filters in your home. Dirty air filters will force your system to work harder because it takes more effort to push the air through the filter. Dirty air filters also contribute to the spread of allergens in your home. For many people the spring brings with it a lot of allergies. Get ahead of these by starting the season with new air filters.
- Clean out your air vents! The vents that run through your home should be cleaned as well. You can do this by vacuuming or wiping the vents with a wet cloth. Cleaning out these vents will also help ensure that your system can function at its highest level of efficiency.
- Check your thermostat and reprogram it for the AC. If you have your thermostat set to the heat you’ll want to adjust it so that the AC kicks on when you need it. If you don’t have a thermostat that can be programmed you may want to consider an upgrade! Having a thermostat that can adjust temperatures while you’re not home saves you money and keeps your home comfortable.
- Check the outdoor HVAC units. If you covered the unit to protect it from ice and snow then it’s time to remove the cover! You should also clear away any debris, such as leaves and sticks, so that they don’t get caught in the system. Keeping your outdoor unit clear of debris is important for the proper functioning of your unit.
