Why Refrigerant Has Changed – R22 vs. 410A

Refrigerant is an important aspect for your HVAC system. If you currently have an older system, you may recognize R22 or Freon as being your refrigerant. However, in recent years the HVAC industry has switched over to 410A or Puron for new ac systems. As a homeowner, it is important for you to know why the industry has made the switch. We will look at the properties of each type to help you make informed decisions about your current HVAC unit.

R22:

Also known as Freon, one of the top brands in refrigerant in past years. In 2010, R22 was discontinued for use in new AC systems due to it being a hydro-chlorofluorocarbon that contributes to ozone depletion. Most likely, if you have a newer system, you will not use R22 but it is still used in some older systems. If you have an older system that still uses R22, keep in mind that supply is limited due to its discontinuation.

410A:

Referred to as Puron, 410A is now the leading refrigerant on the market. It is a hydro-fluorocarbon that does no harm to the ozone layer. By 2015, Puron became the standard refrigerant for all new ac systems.

How do they perform differently?

Aside from the benefit of Puron doing no harm to the ozone layer, it also helps your unit to run smoother. Puron absorbs and releases heat, allowing your compressor to run cooler to prevent overheating. It also works at a higher pressure, compressors in the unit will handle greater stresses and not crack as easily. Finally, it uses synthetic oil that is more soluble, making the unit more efficient, reducing wear and tear.

The HVAC industry continues to work at being more energy efficient and less harmful to the environment. If you have any questions about refrigerant or are interested in a new unit, call A/C Masters at 757-898-2894.
