Has Your Warranty Been Voided?

You own a home, and you officially just had a new HVAC system placed in the house. You are given warranty information and you glance through it, then toss it to the side. Next thing you know something is wrong with your system…but has your warranty already been voided by that time?

Lets start small. When you purchased equipment and a warranty contract through a factory authorized dealer, they will give you copies of your warranty and equipment information. A lot of the different warranty contracts will give you rules and regulations that need to be met in order for the warranty to be maintained. These regulations are marked on the contracts an need to be attended to, to maintain the warranty.

Important warranty information to remember:

  • Always be sure to get copies of your warranty contract and equipment information from he dealer that installs your equipment.
  • Annual maintenance is requited for ALL equipment under a warranty. This means as a homeowner, it is your job to have a qualified technician out to perform routine services at least once a year.
  • When you are scheduling that service, you MUST be sure that the person you are calling is trained to service your equipment. If you have a neighbor that “works in HVAC” don’t let him touch your equipment unless he can show you proof he is a factory trained technician. Having anyone work on your equipment who does not have the credentials voids the warranty.
  • If you have a parts warranty coverage but no labor warranty, that means that any parts that need to be replaced will be covered by the warranty. Labor costs, including diagnostic fee, drive time fee, and labor cost will be required of the home owner.
  • Warranties like this do not cover after hour charges or diagnostic fees. Meaning that if you call after hours, that charge is for you to pay, not the warranty company.
  • Damage to the equipment that is caused by one of the following reasons will not be covered by a warranty contract. Operator negligence, failure to service equipment by factory authorized dealer, abuse, vandalism, theft, fire, flood, wind, freezing, power failure, inadequate power supply, unusual atmospheric conditions, acts of war, acts of nature, damage or failure caused by animals or insects, or refrigerant additions as a top-off or a standalone repair.

Most importantly, if you are unsure, just call. And remember to always, always, take time to review your warranty information before putting it aside. Better to be safe than sorry.
